ChatGPT Starts Selling Ads Inside the Image Generator — a Visual Format Aimed at 1.2 Billion Weekly Users

OpenAI will test a new visual ad format inside ChatGPT's image generator from later this month in the US, on a platform it says reaches 1.2 billion people a week and which crossed $1 billion of annualised ad revenue in under 200 days.

An ad that appears while you wait for a picture to render. That is the shape of OpenAI's newest commercial bet: on 5 October 2026 the company announced a new visual ad format for ChatGPT, tested first inside the image-generation flow, alongside a much larger measurement rollout — new conversion integrations, ten attribution partners, and geo-based incrementality experiments [1]. The audience is not small: OpenAI says ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people each week, which it calls the world's largest AI-native consumer platform [1].

What actually happened

The format itself is image-first, and it starts in the US. OpenAI describes visual ads built around images that show product inspiration, product usage, or the experiences a product makes possible — meant to help a person imagine how something fits into their life rather than to interrupt an answer [1]. The first test runs during image generation in ChatGPT, with the ads clearly labelled and kept separate from the image being generated, and with the company restating that advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT gives [1]. Testing begins later this month in the US with an initial group of advertisers [1], and independent coverage confirms the experiment is US-only for now [4].

The measurement layer is the bigger announcement. Advertisers can now push conversion data from existing systems through integrations with Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp; OpenAI has added attribution partners across web and app — AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin — plus full-funnel partners Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL, and geo-based incrementality work with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic [1]. The early partner numbers it published are specific: DV Rockerbox put WeightWatchers' attributed cost per acquisition on ChatGPT Ads 15.3% below its blended paid-search benchmark; WorkMagic reported that 67% of incremental purchases for wellness brand Dose came from net-new customers; Triple Whale said 93% of Portland Leather's visitors from ChatGPT Ads were new [1]. These are vendor-reported figures on advertiser accounts, not audited studies — treat them as early signals.

Brand-safety plumbing came with it. Placement guardrails decide whether a conversation is suitable for advertising at all, keeping ads out of emotionally vulnerable or sensitive contexts; "Negative Phrases" let qualifying advertisers block their own narrow list of contexts; and brand-suitability evaluation pilots are running with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science, which assess OpenAI's standards without getting access to private conversations [1].

None of this is the first move. ChatGPT Ads hit a $1 billion annualised revenue run rate in under 200 days, with tens of thousands of advertisers on the platform [2]. Self-service buying through Ads Manager opened across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa on 31 August 2026 [2]; after the 23 September expansion into seven Southeast Asian markets and Taiwan, the ads product is live in more than 60 countries, with India among the Asia-Pacific launches [3]. Ads are shown only to users on the Free and Go plans — Plus, Pro and Enterprise remain ad-free [3]. Targeting runs off the context of the current conversation and, where a country and a user's settings allow, the broader ChatGPT experience; advertisers are not handed people's private conversations [2][3].

Why it matters for Indian SMBs and mid-market teams

  • India can already buy this — but the new format cannot. Self-service ChatGPT Ads in India has been open since 31 August [2], while the visual image-generation format tests only in the US from later this month [1][4]. Any Indian agency promising that format this quarter is selling something that does not exist here yet.
  • This is a decision-moment channel, not a feed channel. People arrive in ChatGPT with a goal and constraints — choosing software, planning a renovation, comparing options — which is exactly where a considered purchase gets settled [2][3]. For a mid-market firm selling a considered, high-consideration product, that context is worth more than another impression in a scrolling feed.
  • Do the reach arithmetic honestly. Only Free and Go users see ads [3]. If your customer segment skews to paid tiers, your addressable audience is smaller than the 1.2 billion weekly headline [1] suggests — a question to ask before budget moves, not after.
  • Insist on incrementality, not last-click. The partners OpenAI has lined up exist because platform-reported attribution flatters itself. Ask for a geo holdout before scaling: WorkMagic's 67% net-new figure and Triple Whale's 93% new-visitor figure are the kinds of claims your own test must confirm on your own account [1].
  • Guardrails are a procurement question. Placement rules, Negative Phrases and the DoubleVerify/IAS pilots [1] decide where your brand sits next to generated content. If you sell in a category where adjacency matters — health, finance, anything sensitive — negotiate the exclusion list before the first rupee is spent.
  • Budget shift, not budget dump. A 15.3% CPA improvement against a blended paid-search benchmark [1] is a reason to run a bounded test against Google and Meta, not a reason to move a quarter's budget on one vendor's slide.

Where Guruji Corporation fits in

We treat ChatGPT Ads as a measurable channel, not a novelty. That means wiring conversion events and the Conversions API into the systems you already run, defining the CPA you are actually optimising for, and shipping a small, time-boxed pilot with a geo holdout so the number you take to your board is your number — not the platform's. We also review placement and exclusion settings before launch, because a channel this new rewards the team that reads the policy page first. Talk to us and we will set up the pilot, the measurement, and the honest read on whether it beats what you are running today.
